Thank you for your time and help. I appreciate it.

Turns out the release note of v10.0.12 has just been edited [1]. The notes now explains the ldap writes tempest that we saw due to zimbraLowestSupportedAuthVersion now being '2'.
I've been asking more information here [2]. I hope we'll get a smoother way to resume our upgrade path after New Year's eve than just changing zimbraLowestSupportedAuthVersion one server after the other waiting for ldap load to come down.

BTW, zmslapcat & zmslapadd on both MMR servers helped to recover from this bad situation. Not sure why, though.
