Yes, there is no definitive standard on cross-browser plugins.

And also there is no web standard for accessing PGP smartcards (that
is implemented or completed in the next 2 years).

Also seems that projects like these:
https://github.com/firebreath/FireBreath

Don't do very well, all in all, one needs to do all the work
for each browser/os combination.

If I can find time and funding, chances are, Google Chrome on Windows
will be supported sooner than Firefox.

Maybe I'm confused ... but Firefox extensions are not relying on
PPAPI/Pepper, NPAPI, etc.  But browser plug-ins depend on this API, and
those are usually provided as shared objects.

Firefox extensions (add-ons) and extensions to other browsers are not
compatible, to my knowledge.  For Firefox, that builds on XUL.  More
