I've been using GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket in various settings. For me, I
prefer GitLab.

I value GitLabs friendliness towards FOSS, it is fairly similar feature wise
to GitHub and I have generally very few complaints here. And it should be
possible to migrate out of GitLabs hosted service more easily, especially if
aiming for a self-hosted (or another externally hosted) GitLab install base.
So there lock-in is quite limited.

Bitbucket is the worst one to me. It is overly complicated, slow, and when
bringing in other Atlassian products, you'll notice their integration with
Bitbucket is a second thought. For example, I'm having different username for
bitbucket, Jira and Confluence - because my preferred username was taken on
some of them. And their permissions management is a perfect example of how
NOT to do it. You click and hope you did it correct.

Another option I've heard popping up quite regularly these last days is
https://gitea.io/en-US/ I don't know much about it, and it seems to be only
a self-hosted solution.
