upgrading gitlab on CentOS is as easy as "yum update" (there's a gitlab-ce repo with everything in it).

Hello Aaron, 

I am thinking about hosting the Gitlab for Zeta Alliance as well, and avoid some of 
the possible scaling issues at Gitlab.com. 

How do you upgrade the gitlab software, how painful is it? Upgrading is one of the 
main reasons not to go with a self-hosted solution. But self hosted has other benefits.

I've been using a private self-hosted gitlab server for several years and it has treated us well.  The public gitlab.com site has gone through some growing pains in the past couple of years...and from what I've read they are probably dealing with huge traffic spikes today following the github announcement.
